Tristia ClarkeTristia ClarkeMoving home: pack up your boxes not your broadband

Ask anyone who has moved house and they’ll tell you it’s a stressful time, and one part of the hassle is having to cancel all your household bills and re-start them at your new property. Nowadays this isn’t just your gas, electric and TV licence – it’s your broadband too.

Until now, the system of moving your broadband account to a new address was complicated and expensive.

TalkTalk customers would typically have to cancel their contract at the property they were moving out of, sign up with BT (if it was a non-cable area) at their new address, immediately cancel the BT contract once the phone line was up and running, and then sign up with the TalkTalk again.

This wasn’t just a cumbersome and slow way of doing things – it was also expensive.

Because you had to sign up to BT just to get your line working, you had to commit to a full contract (whether 12 or 18 months) as if you were planning to stay as a customer. If you then cancelled after a few days to switch to TalkTalk – or any other ISP for that matter – you had to pay the total amount of the contract to leave. This could be around £120, or even more.

Not surprisingly, the hassle and cost of this process was one of the biggest bugbears our customers used to complain about.

So what we’ve now introduced is a much faster and cheaper Home Mover service that aims to remove the hassle from taking your broadband with you when you move house. All you have to do is let us know you’re moving, at least two weeks beforehand, and we’ll sort out everything for you.

We’ve been trialling this for several months to make sure it works smoothly, and we believe it will make life considerably easier for customers, but as always we’d welcome your feedback if you’ve used the Home Mover service yourself.

(P.S. The service has already been written about here and here.)
