Mark SchmidMark SchmidRouters of the future unveiled

If you’ve got home broadband, chances are you’ve got a router. Whether hidden under a desk or shoved next to the TV, this ubiquitous chunk of plastic and wires may be functional – but it certainly isn’t sexy. Partly as a bit of fun, and partly to just say ‘what if?’, we decided to create some futuristic ‘concept routers’ that changed the way we look at those drab grey boxes.

We got together with Goldsmiths, University of London – world renowned for design and innovation – to take a fresh look at the humble router to give us something more than just a means of getting on the internet.

We asked Goldsmiths to consider four factors: signal strength, home style, energy efficiency and, finally, pure enjoyment. As I’m sure you’ll agree our bit of future gazing has produced some provocative results. Personally, I’m rather fond of the jelly fish – it has a real wow factor – but here in the TalkTalk team everyone seems to have their own favourite.

Members of the public are being invited to visit www.futurerouters.com and vote for their favourite – we’ll be considering the winning design for production.

After getting a design make-over, perhaps now is the time to start thinking differently about the usually unloved router?
