Today is Get Online Day. As its name suggests, it’s a day of activities aimed at encouraging those who’ve never used the internet before, or only used it infrequently, to get online and begin experiencing everything that the web has to offer.
This year the good folks at Get Online Day want people who are already online to “Pass IT On” to their friends and family members who are not.
By visiting the Pass IT On website you can find details of Get Online Day events that might be suitable for your less tech-savvy friends or family. You can also register them with MyGuide – a website designed to help people take their first steps with computers and the internet – or help them play GOLD Rush, an online quiz.
Digital inclusion is a hugely important topic and, from TalkTalk’s point of view, has always been one of our main focuses. We’ve helped encourage digital inclusion through projects such as our own Digital Heroes Awards and by ensuring that the cost of broadband will never be a barrier to uptake.
Recent research from the UK’s Digital Champion, Martha Lane Fox (also one of our Digital Heroes judges), pointed out that an unemployed person who got online could increase their lifetime earnings by over £12,000. Overall, the most economically disadvantaged families are missing out on savings of over £1bn by ignoring the benefits of the internet.
That’s why we’re happy to draw your attention to the fantastic work being carried out by everyone at Get Online Day and urge you all to Pass IT On to anyone you know who’s still digitally excluded.
