It’s a fact of modern parenting that kids start using computers from a very young age.
As a parent myself, I know how children love to press buttons and play around with machines. I also know they seem amazingly adept at understanding and using technology, even from as young as three years old.
For parents – and indeed grandparents – this provides a dilemma. We realise that digital technology will be increasingly essential in the modern world, so we want our children to be as au fait with it as possible. At the same time, we know there are certain risks – both to them, in terms of what content they can ‘stumble’ upon, and to us when they play on the keyboard and accidentally delete important files or pull buttons off!
Today we’ve launched a new child safety product called Magic Desktop to answer some of these needs.
It provides a “walled garden” environment so children can visit only the websites that have first been approved by parents or grandparents and can email only those people on a list of parent-approved contacts. It also means they can’t access any files on your computer.
There are a whole host of child-friendly applications in the program. For instance, children can build up a bank of points by completing learning exercises that they can then redeem to play games for fun. Parents can also add points for doing chores or homework in the offline world. It’s the perfect way for parents or grandparents to introduce young children to digital technology and the internet in a safe and fun way.
We’re so enthusiastic about Magic Desktop that we’re making it available for free in an exclusive offer available only to TalkTalk customers. You can also make a one-off payment of £19.99 to upgrade to the premium version, which includes over 100 extra games and educational puzzles.
We think Magic Desktop is great for kids but also gives peace of mind to parents.
We’re also looking to offer further child safety products aimed at older children over the coming months, so look out for more information on that later.
