Mark SchmidMark SchmidLove is in the air… and on the phone

Britain’s romantics are putting the finishing touches to their plans for Valentine’s Day. Have you sent your loved one a card? Or are you one of the growing number of Brits who is showing their love for the environment by picking up the phone and telling your Valentine how you feel?

It would appear that the classic display of affection shown through sending a Valentine’s Day card comes at an environmental cost. TalkTalk can reveal that the British public sends in excess of 795 million greetings cards a year, with Valentine’s Day the third most popular card-sending occasion. This is equivalent to 265,000 trees and 33,390 tonnes of CO2, despite our research finding that 44% of Brits would actually prefer to tell their loved ones how they feel over the phone than in writing.

The UK Valentine’s Card market expends enough energy to boil over 37 million kettles annually, so calling your loved one rather than sending a card could be a small step in the right direction for the planet. It could also help your relationship, as we found out that more than two-thirds of us prefer to hear the voice of a loved one over receiving a card…
