Christmas is approaching fast and at TalkTalk our thoughts turn to how our network will be used to keep people in touch this festive season.
In previous years we used to hear about the electricity surge as kettles were switched on after the Queen’s speech, but it’s the internet that’s expected to break records this Christmas.
Last year’s Christmas traffic on our network reached 85 gigabits. With more and more people going online on our network, this year’s Christmas broadband traffic is expected to hit around 270 Gbps, over three times that of 2009, at 11am on Christmas Day.
Part of this growth is due to people trying out new internet-enabled gadgets on Christmas Day and using multiple devices to go online at the same time. It’s been estimated that £2bn will be spent on technology this Christmas, with laptops, iPads and smart phones expected to be the top sellers.
So if you’re going to be playing with a new gadget this Christmas, it’s a good idea to check your broadband is optimised to give you the smoothest connection possible.
At this time of year Christmas lights can be a particular problem for home broadband as they operate on similar frequencies and can cause significant interference, as can other electrical items when they’re put too close to the router. Our advice is that Christmas tree lights should not be plugged next to the router or your home phone wiring. It’s a similar story with cordless phones and wireless security cameras, which can conflict with your home wi-fi.
And if you want some extra support, then check out our Christmas online survival guide or watch one of our new help videos.
So whether you’ll be using your broadband to try out a new gift or snap up bargains in the online sales, we hope you have a great Christmas and a very happy New Year!
