Ofcom’s latest broadband speed report shows that Britain’s broadband is getting faster, and what’s more, it confirms that TalkTalk customers are getting faster speeds than those with BT, BT PlusNet or Sky (and of course, we’re cheaper too).
According to the Ofcom report, average download speeds across the UK increased by 5% between May and December 2010. It’s good news for everyone who loves going on line but, while it’s great to be doing well in charts based on averages, we’re even more interested in helping every customer know exactly what speed they’re getting and how it can be improved.
That’s why we’re today launching our new Speed Checker – the most advanced in the industry – that allows customers to see the speed delivered from their exchange, the speed arriving at their home and the speed they’re actually seeing on their PC or device. This is the information that allows customers to optimise their service and truly get the fastest speeds their line will allow. In our recent trial, over half of customers using our Speed Checker made some quick and easy changes to their home set up with a view to improving their speed.
So if you’re a customer, why not have a go? If you’re not a customer and would like to see what speed you’d get, enter your details and we’ll give you an estimate. We are focused to being totally transparent on speeds and will only sign up a customer when we’ve given them an estimated speed based on their line and their proximity to the local exchange.
What’s next? You can take it from me that we’ll continue our commitment to providing the highest speeds at the lowest prices which is great news for customers and perhaps slightly worrying for our competitors!

I am with talktalk and get 14mbps download speed.I am about a mile from the exchange so this is brilliant. My next door neighbour is on BT and gets 1mbps.Bt are pants !

14 Mbps may be nice for download, but few people speak about upload speeds, which are largely pathetic. If you get 1 Mbps it’s ‘good’. And that is still very slow.
They matter!
For example:
- sending larger attachments
- online backups.

UK speeds are 5% of other competing countries, and we will be unable to participate in Cloud Technologies properly.
The UK economy is being crippled by this.
I hope TalkTalk is profitable, but sadly there is no future without 50% speed increase every year.
CNN reported yesterday that S. Korea will have 200x average UK speeds with 99% coverage by 2011.
