Tristia ClarkeTristia ClarkeGadget crazy Britain gears up for most connected Christmas

This Christmas looks set to be the most connected of all time with an estimated 16 million gadgets connecting to the internet on Christmas day.

Last year traffic on our network trebled compared with the previous year and this year we’re expecting a further 25% uplift in broadband traffic across our network compared to last year taking it up to 320 gigabits – that’s equivalent to over two million people (the combined populations of the cities of Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh) all streaming Spotify at the same time.

Our research shows that three quarters of us will call friends and families this Christmas, while around 60% will check their emails and email loved ones on the day. Almost 40% of people say that modern technology has brought their extended families closer together and a third feel that even if they are not with their friends and family this Christmas, they still feel a part of the festivities due to Facebook and Skype.

With more and more of us staying in touch with friends and family online at Christmas, it is even more important than ever that everyone enjoys a great internet experience over the holiday. To help customers, we’re offering certain customers a free speed optimisation visit from one of our Bright Spark engineers who will make sure that your broadband is running at the fastest possible. To find out if you qualify just use the TalkTalk Speed Checker and also get some simple tips on how to improve your in-home set up yourself. So far, our Bright Sparks have visited over 1,000 homes and have helped them get an average speed increase of around 4Mbps.

We’ve also published a free online survival guide, covering everything from connecting new gadgets to going wireless, which is available at talktalk.co.uk/selfhelp.

So from all of us here at TalkTalk, we hope that you have a very merry – and connected – Christmas.
