Last year, I blogged about our reaction to the Government’s Bailey Review into the commercialisation of children, and specifically that we welcomed the recommendation that parents should be offered an ‘active choice’ about whether to use parental controls. We committed to implementing this for all new customers by October 2012 and today I am really [...]

Child internet safety has been in the news again this week following a spam attack of indecent images on a social network. Indeed, we announced a few weeks ago that we fully support the recommendation of the Bailey Review that parents should be helped to block inappropriate content on the internet and be offered an ‘Active Choice’ about whether to use controls. 8 Making sure super fast is super competitive
We recently reflected on some of the comments made by the Culture Secretary on piracy and parental controls in his speech to the Royal Television Society. Today I wanted to focus specifically on his vision for superfast broadband. As Mr Hunt recognised, the UK benefits from some of the lowest broadband prices and most innovative services [...]

9 8.5 million homes victim of a cyber attack
The internet is ultimately a wonderful thing that helps us communicate with friends, access a world of information and even save money. But there are some risks we need to be aware of, just like in the real world. Well over eight million homes in the UK experienced some form of cyber-attack in the first [...]

10 Our reflections on the Culture Secretary’s speech
Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Secretary, made an important speech this week to the Royal Television Society. He covered a lot of ground but there are two aspects which I wanted to dwell on. Firstly, we were pleased to hear Mr Hunt outline his thoughts on copyright protection. He suggested that responsibility for reducing access to sites which [...]

11 Protect yourself from the dark side of the net
While the internet is ultimately a great tool, most of our customers will know about the nuisances posed by viruses or spam. And unfortunately the web is now a growing opportunity for serious crime. By 2015 it is predicted that there will be more than 2 connections to the internet for each person on the Earth, [...]

13 Response to Mirror Flawedband article
We were interested to see this article in the Mirror quoting research from Simplifydigital.com which claims that those who live in poorer and rural areas are paying more for broadband. Simplyfydigital say that this is due to companies being unwilling to invest in exchanges unless they know they will make a good return on investment, which they say means rural areas often miss out.

14 TalkTalk welcomes the Bailey Review
Today, the Prime Minister published a new report on the commercialisation of children, called ‘Letting Children Be Children’. Prepared by Reg Bailey, the chief executive of Mother’s Union, the report makes recommendations on many areas including pop videos and adult clothing aimed at young girls, but, as an internet service provider, we were particularly interested in its finding that many parents have concerns about the types of content their children can access online.

17 We all love paying less!
Last week Ofcom revealed that, on average, customers today are paying more than 50% less for their broadband than they did in 2005. This is great news for our customers and it’s due to something called Local Loop Unbundling, which means that companies like us are able to install equipment into local telephone exchanges that [...]
