61 TalkTalk trials fibre-optic broadband
Collectively, the broadband industry often seems to confuse people with jargon and superlatives. You’ll often see terms like "speed" and "fast" used in various combinations to create a plethora of overlapping terms.....ultra-fast broadband...super-fast broadband....high speed broadband. And then there is the all those industry-invented abbreviations....NGA, FTTC, FTTP, 21CN.

62 Helping tune up your broadband speed
Recently I blogged on how we’ve invested in our Next Generation Network – the largest in the UK behind BT – to give our customers the most reliable broadband service at the best possible speed. I mentioned that, despite the focus on people’s distance from the internet exchange, in actual fact broadband speed can be significantly affected by very simple things in people’s homes. Indeed, around 60% of people, by our estimation, have sub-optimal wiring in their home which affects the quality and speed of their broadband connection.

63 Routers of the future unveiled
If you’ve got home broadband, chances are you’ve got a router. Whether hidden under a desk or shoved next to the TV, this ubiquitous chunk of plastic and wires may be functional – but it certainly isn’t sexy. Partly as a bit of fun, and partly to just say ‘what if?’, we decided to create some futuristic 'concept routers' that changed the way we look at those drab grey boxes.

64 What’s stopping consumers taking up broadband bundles?
Online comparison engine BroadbandChoices.co.uk published results of research earlier this week, suggesting that 30% of broadband consumers are foregoing possible savings by not bundling broadband with other telelcoms services. To some, bundling broadband with services like home phone just makes sense, but what's holding people back?

65 Cloud computing provides impetus for dongle sales
A few months ago we questioned whether mobile broadband was starting to replace fixed line broadband as users’ primary connection. Our research showed that for the majority, a ‘dongle’ was still very much a complimentary tool, providing access on the move while fixed line provided a faster and more consistent connection for multiple users to access services such as online video and gaming.

66 Welcoming Tiscali UK to the TalkTalk Group
Today is a milestone in the history of TalkTalk. We’ve formally completed the acquisition of Tiscali UK, first announced in May, making us the biggest provider of broadband to Britain’s homes. We now reach over 4 million people – a fantastic achievement as we’ve only been concentrating on the broadband market since 2006.

67 Helping Digital Britain achieve maximum speed
Much of the discussion about the Digital Britain report, published a couple of weeks ago, has focused on the Government’s promise to provide universal broadband throughout the UK at a minimum speed of 2mb by 2012.

68 The Digital Divide: the ongoing battle
Over the past 10 years great efforts have been made in getting Britain online and closing what’s been called the “digital divide”. These days the majority of households have access to broadband but there’s still a stubbornly large minority – around 30% – who have remained offline.

69 Moving home: pack up your boxes not your broadband
Ask anyone who has moved house and they’ll tell you it’s a stressful time, and one part of the hassle is having to cancel all your household bills and re-start them at your new property. Nowadays this isn’t just your gas, electric and TV licence – it’s your broadband too.

70 Your questions answered about the Tiscali deal
Last week we announced our intention to purchase Tiscali to make TalkTalk the leading home phone and broadband company. It’s been quite a week for everyone involved and we remain just as excited about welcoming Tiscali to the TalkTalk family. While it has helped reassure Tiscali customers about the immediate future of their broadband service, it has understandably led to people wanting to know more about what happens next.

71 Customers switch on to changing providers
Is the telecoms market reaching its saturation point? That's a question that the industry commentators have been asking themselves for a while, as the period of great growth in telecoms comes to an end, leaving a handful of providers owning most of the market.

72 Welcoming Tiscali is next chapter in TalkTalk story
You may have read this morning that TalkTalk is buying Tiscali UK to create Britain’s largest home broadband provider. We launched TalkTalk in February 2003 to challenge the existing order and provide better value and more choice. Today’s announcements means we have with over 4.25m broadband customers – over 25% of all UK households. If I look back six years no one could have imagined that a mobile phone retailer would build the largest residential broadband provider in the UK, but our determination to offer incredible value with the latest technology has got us to where we are today.

73 Save our broadband
Ofcom is about to reset the price of LLU - these are the products that most UK ISPs rely on to offer broadband services. We are really worried that the telecoms regulator Ofcom is going to let BT get away with charging excessive LLU prices that could result in you paying £20 to £30 a year more than you should do for your broadband. Openreach – the part of BT that runs the access network – is already making huge profits above Ofcom’s target rate. These rises will in effect mean you will being taxed to fund even more excess profits for BT. These LLU price rises will make us probably the most expensive in Europe (and possibly the laughing stock too).

74 Mobile Broadband: essential or gadget?
Mobile broadband is a topic that's always sure to create a lively debate. To some it's a fantastic way of having the internet at your fingertips wherever you are. To others it's a frustrating experience, marred with blackspots and slow speeds. To me, the issue is more about expectation.

76 TalkTalk network snowed under, but holds up well
The snow has brought equal measures of chaos and fun, depending on whether you were trying to get to work or had been given the day off school on Monday. With most of the transport infrastructure closed, particularly in London, millions of workers decided that the best course of action was to work from home.
