Data shows even more Britons are getting online
New Government statistics show that more than 600,000 Britons used the internet for the first time during the last 12 months. That’s more people than live in Glasgow, but there are still more than 8million who have never gone online, according to the Internet Access Quarterly Update from the Office for National Statistics. The disappointing thing about [...] |

Making sure super fast is super competitive

Our reflections on the Culture Secretary’s speech
Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Secretary, made an important speech this week to the Royal Television Society. He covered a lot of ground but there are two aspects which I wanted to dwell on. Firstly, we were pleased to hear Mr Hunt outline his thoughts on copyright protection. He suggested that responsibility for reducing access to sites which [...] |

We recently attended a roundtable debate hosted by the Guardian, which looked at the very topical issue of protecting children online and was written up in today’s Guardian Society pages. There were a range of organisations and viewpoints represented, including Childnet, Mother’s Union and CEOP, while Claire Perry MP and Dr Linda Papadopoulos contributed too. The [...] |

The Ultimate in Online Vanity: a Completely Personal Domain Name
When I was a kid we used to use Letraset to make signs including our names on our schoolbooks and the like. Now, it’s a lot simpler to see your name all over the place: buy your own personal domain name. But when you do that you’ve always got the difficulty of deciding whether to go [...] |

HomeSafe – a mum’s view
I am genuinely excited by TalkTalk’s new product: HomeSafe. If it wasn’t for Blog Camp, it would have passed me by as I am not one to read the leaflets that are in with my bills, and even now that I have read them, I don’t think they do HomeSafe justice. Incidentally, Blog Camp took place on Thursday 12th May, the week that HomeSafe was launched. |

TalkTalk welcomes the Bailey Review
Today, the Prime Minister published a new report on the commercialisation of children, called ‘Letting Children Be Children’. Prepared by Reg Bailey, the chief executive of Mother’s Union, the report makes recommendations on many areas including pop videos and adult clothing aimed at young girls, but, as an internet service provider, we were particularly interested in its finding that many parents have concerns about the types of content their children can access online. |

The death of the text message?
We were interested to read the Daily Mail’s article this week predicting the death of the text message within a generation. It chimes with similar predictions we made way back in 2009 about the eventual demise of email. Indeed the Daily Mail quoted from our report to suggest that both the text and the email may eventual slide into the technological dustbin of history. |

We all love paying less!
Last week Ofcom revealed that, on average, customers today are paying more than 50% less for their broadband than they did in 2005. This is great news for our customers and it’s due to something called Local Loop Unbundling, which means that companies like us are able to install equipment into local telephone exchanges that [...] |

Ofcom’s report reveals a picture of a networked nation
Today’s report from Ofcom on the state of the international communications market makes for fascinating reading. Many of the headlines today have focused on the fact that British consumers are some of the most enthusiastic ‘early adopters’ of technology and spend almost twice as much online as our European neighbours. On average we spent an incredible £1,031 [...] |
