2 Data shows even more Britons are getting online
New Government statistics show that more than 600,000 Britons used the internet for the first time during the last 12 months. That’s more people than live in Glasgow, but there are still more than 8million who have never gone online, according to the Internet Access Quarterly Update from the Office for National Statistics. The disappointing thing about [...]

4 Protecting children online with parental controls
We welcome the continued focus from Government, and specifically the Prime Minister, on the hugely important issue of protecting children online. TalkTalk remains the only ISP to ask new customers to make an upfront decision about using parental controls. Since we began doing this in March, one in three new customers has chosen to activate them; [...]

7 Digital era offers more for less
It’s the end of an era. Encyclopedia Britannica announced an end to printed editions during the same week the Government changed the way it measures inflation, by including the cost of bundled internet and phone packages, and tablet computers such as the iPad. The National Audit Office uses a basket of 700 goods and services to [...]

9 Savvy shoppers let their fingers do the walking
An interesting trend is developing in retail. Out of town shopping centres are starting to look like an outdated concept, as more and more shoppers buy their groceries, luxuries, white goods and entertainment online. Retail analyst Verdict Research says online sales have more than doubled to £26.3bn in the last five years and will rise to [...]

10 TalkTalk announces launch of Government-backed ‘Active Choice’
Last year, I blogged about our reaction to the Government’s Bailey Review into the commercialisation of children, and specifically that we welcomed the recommendation that parents should be offered an ‘active choice’ about whether to use parental controls. We committed to implementing this for all new customers by October 2012 and today I am really [...]

13 Protect yourself from the dark side of the net
While the internet is ultimately a great tool, most of our customers will know about the nuisances posed by viruses or spam. And unfortunately the web is now a growing opportunity for serious crime. 16 Guardian roundtable: how to make the net safe
We recently attended a roundtable debate hosted by the Guardian, which looked at the very topical issue of protecting children online and was written up in today’s Guardian Society pages. There were a range of organisations and viewpoints represented, including Childnet, Mother’s Union and CEOP, while Claire Perry MP and Dr Linda Papadopoulos contributed too. The [...]

17 Response to Mirror Flawedband article
We were interested to see this article in the Mirror quoting research from Simplifydigital.com which claims that those who live in poorer and rural areas are paying more for broadband. Simplyfydigital say that this is due to companies being unwilling to invest in exchanges unless they know they will make a good return on investment, which they say means rural areas often miss out.

18 From snakes to angry birds: how mobile gaming got serious
Remember Snake? When I brought my first mobile phone, a Nokia 5110, this game was the premier ‘app’ of the day. The concept was simple: steer your snake around the screen at increasing speeds, eat dots (which make you grow), and don’t hit the walls or your tail. Like many easy-to-play but difficult-to-master games it [...]

19 The Ultimate in Online Vanity: a Completely Personal Domain Name
When I was a kid we used to use Letraset to make signs including our names on our schoolbooks and the like. Now, it’s a lot simpler to see your name all over the place: buy your own personal domain name. But when you do that you’ve always got the difficulty of deciding whether to go [...]

20 TalkTalk welcomes the Bailey Review
Today, the Prime Minister published a new report on the commercialisation of children, called ‘Letting Children Be Children’. Prepared by Reg Bailey, the chief executive of Mother’s Union, the report makes recommendations on many areas including pop videos and adult clothing aimed at young girls, but, as an internet service provider, we were particularly interested in its finding that many parents have concerns about the types of content their children can access online.
