Making sure super fast is super competitive
We recently reflected on some of the comments made by the Culture Secretary on piracy and parental controls in his speech to the Royal Television Society. Today I wanted to focus specifically on his vision for superfast broadband. As Mr Hunt recognised, the UK benefits from some of the lowest broadband prices and most innovative services [...] |

8.5 million homes victim of a cyber attack
The internet is ultimately a wonderful thing that helps us communicate with friends, access a world of information and even save money. But there are some risks we need to be aware of, just like in the real world. Well over eight million homes in the UK experienced some form of cyber-attack in the first [...] |

Our reflections on the Culture Secretary’s speech
Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Secretary, made an important speech this week to the Royal Television Society. He covered a lot of ground but there are two aspects which I wanted to dwell on. Firstly, we were pleased to hear Mr Hunt outline his thoughts on copyright protection. He suggested that responsibility for reducing access to sites which [...] |

We all love paying less!
Last week Ofcom revealed that, on average, customers today are paying more than 50% less for their broadband than they did in 2005. This is great news for our customers and it’s due to something called Local Loop Unbundling, which means that companies like us are able to install equipment into local telephone exchanges that [...] |

One month on, £320m worth of Christmas gizmos remain unused
Today marks a month since Christmas Day and for most of us the memory of unwrapping our presents on Christmas morning is now rather a distant one. But for some of us our presents have stuck around – and not always in a welcome way. Our research today has found that around one in 12 people who [...] |

We’re now looking for customers to test the product which includes anti-malware alerts and parental controls. The anti-malware alerts will warn customers if they visit a page that may contain a virus. The software is implemented at a network level so there is no need to download it onto your computer. |

Judicial review of the Digital Economy Act
Today, in conjunction with BT, we’ve filed papers with the High Court asking for a judicial review of the Digital Economy Act. We’ve asked the High Court to look at whether the Act was passed into law without going through the correct parliamentary procedures. As many of you will know, the Act was rushed through Parliament in [...] |

The Mighty Finns lead the way
Last week saw two interesting announcements that say a lot about the importance of internet access. First, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, announced he is in favour of introducing WiFi onto the London Underground in time for the Olympics in 2012, as long as the technology is viable. Second, the Finnish parliament passed a law to [...] |

Response to the Government’s 50p phone tax
The 50p phone tax is an unfair, regressive and wasteful way of funding superfast broadband which would deliver less benefit than it will cost, slow superfast broadband roll-out and drive around 200,000 homes off broadband. |

Dan Bull takes us back to the 80s when “home taping was killing music”
We all know that the government’s disconnection proposals to deter illegal filesharing are daft and dangerous. And many would agree that the way many people in the music industry have reacted is a little misguided. After all, haven’t we seen this type of scaremongering before? |

Our help is just a YouTube video away
We’ve noticed that a significant portion of the calls and emails we receive from our customers focus on just a few common issues. Some of these are minor ‘technical’ problems which can actually be resolved quite quickly. Others are the equivalent of “frequently asked questions” people have about their internet experience. |
